Bringing a new dog home is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming — for you and your pup! Remember the 3–3–3 Rule:
- 3 Days to decompress and adjust to new surroundings.
- 3 Weeks to start settling into routines and showing personality.
- 3 Months to feel fully at home.
Every dog adjusts at their own pace. Give them patience, consistency, and lots of love.
House Training Basics
Accidents happen — especially in new environments. Set your dog up for success by:
- Taking them outside often (after meals, naps, play).
- Praising and rewarding immediately after they go in the right spot.
- Supervising indoors and limiting freedom until they earn it.
Patience and consistency are key.
Building Good Habits
- Leash Walking: Short, positive walks are best at first. Reward calm behavior and use sturdy equipment.
- Chewing: Offer durable toys to satisfy natural chewing needs and protect your shoes.
- Boundaries: Decide early what’s allowed (couch, bed, etc.) and be consistent.
Crate Training & Safe Spaces
A crate isn’t “doggy jail” — it’s a safe, cozy spot where your dog can relax.
- Start slow with short sessions and plenty of positive reinforcement.
- Keep mealtimes, naps, and bedtime routines consistent.
- Make the crate inviting with a blanket or safe chew toy.
Tip: Feeding meals in the crate can make it a happy place.
Socialization & Introductions
- Take introductions to resident pets slowly, in controlled settings.
- Watch body language — wagging tails aren’t always friendly signals.
- Expose your dog gradually to new sights, sounds, and people.
Health & Wellness Checklist
- Schedule a vet appointment within the first 1–2 weeks.
- Stay current on heartworm, flea, and tick prevention.
- Feed a balanced diet (your vet can recommend the best fit).
- Keep a list of emergency vets handy.
