After a tragic accident and major surgery, Tucker’s story reminds us why Dallas Street Dog Advocates’ lifelong commitment to every dog truly matters.
Tucker’s Journey: Healing After Orthopedic Surgery
On September 30th, Tucker visited an orthopedic specialist for a second opinion. Sadly, his healing hasn’t gone as expected. New x-rays revealed that the bone is not calcifying properly, and the rod and plate may be too short for his femur and possibly even loosening.
For now, Tucker is back on strict crate rest with the help of a supportive sling and calming medication. He’ll return to the specialist on October 28th for further x-rays under sedation to determine whether the hardware has shifted or if a revision surgery will be needed.
If his bone heals properly, the hardware may eventually be removed — but if it fails to stabilize, revision or even amputation could become the only option.
Tucker’s Backstory: From Heartbreak to Hope
Many of you will remember Tucker’s heartbreaking rescue story this summer. In July, after five years in his adoptive home, Tucker was given away to a man with no stable place to keep him safe.
He was soon roaming the busy streets of Addison, where he was struck by a car. Addison Animal Control picked him up and reached out to Dallas Street Dog Advocates (DSDA) because we were listed as secondary contact on his microchip.
Unfortunately, Texas law treats animals as property, so the shelter was required to spend several days attempting to locate “David,” the man Tucker was given to by his original adopter, before allowing us to reclaim him.
During this time, Tucker suffered from heat exhaustion, severe road rash, and a completely displaced right femur fracture. Only after six long days was Tucker legally released back to DSDA when both the original adopter and “David” agreed to surrender him.
On July 15th, Tucker underwent major orthopedic surgery to repair his shattered femur with rods, plates, and pins — at a cost of over $6,700, far more than initially quoted.
Why Tucker’s Story Matters
Tucker’s suffering—and the thousands of dollars in medical expenses—never should have happened. Per DSDA’s adoption contract, we will always take our dogs back, no matter how much time has passed.
If Tucker’s adopter had simply contacted us, none of this pain, trauma, or financial burden would have been necessary. This is why our policy exists: dogs like Tucker deserve lifelong protection.
At DSDA, we are committed to honoring that promise. While it’s never easy for our volunteers to juggle foster homes or boarding arrangements, we will always step up to keep our dogs safe.
