How to Be a Foster Super Star with DSDA

Why fosters are heroes — and how you can help save more lives

At Dallas Street Dog Advocates (DSDA), our mission depends on one thing above all: foster families. Because DSDA doesn’t have a physical shelter, every dog we save relies on someone opening their home and heart to give them a second chance.

When you foster, you’re not just giving a dog food, water, and a safe place to sleep — you’re teaching them how to be part of a family, helping them heal, and preparing them for their forever home. Fosters are the bridge between life on the streets and life with a loving family.

And when fosters go above and beyond, we call them Foster Super Stars

Why Fostering Matters

Every dog you foster creates space for us to rescue another. Without fosters, we simply can’t save as many dogs — it’s that simple.

Having DSDA dogs in foster homes rather than in a kennel means:

  • We learn more about their personality, preferences, and quirks.
  • We can match them with the right forever family more accurately.
  • They get the socialization, stability, and love they need to thrive.

Fosters are the heartbeat of DSDA — we couldn’t do this without you.

Foster Super Star Essentials

Being a Foster Super Star doesn’t mean being perfect — it means being proactive, engaged, and committed. Here’s what sets great fosters apart:

1. Provide Love, Structure & Socialization

  • Create a safe, comfortable environment for your foster dog.
  • Help them learn family life: crate training, leash walking, basic manners, and positive interactions.
  • Offer plenty of exercise, playtime, and enrichment based on their needs.
  • Give them patience and understanding as they decompress and adjust to life off the streets.

2. Be Their Advocate

Your foster dog can’t market themselves — you’re their voice.

  • Take great photos and videos — happy, playful, and natural shots help dogs get noticed.
  • Share updates about your foster’s personality, progress, and quirks.
  • Submit weekly photos, videos, and bios to the DSDA team so we can showcase your foster on our website and social media.
  • Use DSDA’s Volunteer Facebook page to post updates and connect with the team — it builds community and helps us market your foster.

DSDA Tip: The better the photos, the faster the adoption. Outdoor lighting, eye contact, and candid moments make a huge difference!

3. Help Get Them Seen

Exposure is everything when it comes to finding forever homes:

  • Bring your foster dog to adoption events at least twice a month (or more if they’re ready).
  • Attend meet-and-greets with potential adopters when possible — your insight helps families make the best decision.
  • Take your foster out in public wearing a DSDA bandanna — walks, patios, dog-friendly outings — it sparks conversations and gets them noticed.
  • Share their story on your own social media and encourage friends, family, and coworkers to do the same.

4. Work as a Team

When you foster with DSDA, you’re never alone:

  • Stay in touch with your Foster Coordinator — your updates help us promote your foster effectively.
  • Ask for help if you need marketing materials, flyers, or support — DSDA can provide resources.
  • Partner with us on adoption strategies, from social media campaigns to community outreach.

Why Foster Updates Matter

A dog’s personality blossoms in a foster home — and your insight is the key to matching them with the right family. Weekly updates help us:

  • Write accurate, compelling bios
  • Share your foster’s progress on DSDA’s website and social media
  • Market them to adopters who are looking for a perfect match

When fosters stay engaged, dogs find homes faster.

Foster Super Star Bonus Tips

  • Network creatively: Talk to your friends, family, coworkers — you never know who’s looking to adopt.
  • Leverage social media: The more shares, likes, and comments, the better the visibility.
  • Use your DSDA resources: Flyers, photos, and templates are available — just ask!
  • Celebrate milestones: First walks, first naps on the couch, first time playing with a toy — those moments tell the story adopters want to hear.

Final Thought

Fostering saves lives. Every update, every adoption event, every photo, every cuddle — it all matters. DSDA foster families are more than volunteers; you’re the bridge between the streets and a forever home.

If you’re ready to become a Foster Super Star, we’ll support you every step of the way — because together, we’re giving these dogs the love, care, and second chances they deserve.
