Congratulations on adopting a rescued dog from Dallas Street Dog Advocates! To help you prepare for your upcoming home visit and welcome your new pup, here’s a list of the supplies we recommend.
Essentials for Your New Dog
- Food & Water Bowls — Sturdy, easy-to-clean bowls are best.
- Dog Food — DSDA recommends Purina Pro Plan as it’s highly rated, vet-recommended, and reasonably priced. Your pet should start with the same food he/she is currently eating and then transition as needed to avoid tummy troubles (DSDA will provide this info).
- Training Treats — Soft, small treats work best for rewards.
Collars, Harnesses & Leashes
- Collar — Regular quick-release collar only.
(DSDA does not recommend martingale collars.) - Harness — We recommend the Rabbitgoo Front & Back Clip Harness (link) — affordable, comfortable, and easy to use.
- Leash — Standard 4-6 ft leash.
(Please avoid retractable leashes — they can cause injury to both you and your dog.) - ID Tag — Include your phone number.
- If you haven’t chosen a name yet, use your last name.
- Keep the DSDA tag on at all times — it’s an extra safety measure in case your dog becomes lost.
Crate & Bedding
- Wire Folding Crate — Choose a size your dog can grow into. Your dog should be able to stand and turn comfortably when full grown.
Recommended crate sizes:- Up to 20 lbs → 30 inches
- 41–70 lbs → 42 inches
- 80 lbs → 46 inches
- 100+ lbs → 48–54 inches
- Up to 20 lbs → 30 inches
- Crate Bedding — Blankets, soft towels, or a fitted crate pad.

- Variety of Toys — Start with a mix:
- A ball for fetch
- Puzzle toys for mental stimulation
